Looking for a quick weekend project to spruce up your patio, deck or even you front porch? Container gardening is a great, easy project to do just that. Whether you are sprucing up some pots you already have, planning to buy new containers or creating a specific container garden, you will be pleased with your results.
Have some boring clay pots? Add some interest by sprucing up your old pots with paint! Spray paint can be used on clay pots; even plastics can now be painted with spray paint. Think about creating a design on your pot, use painters’ tape to create color blocking details or stripes. When purchasing new pots you can be a little adventurous with color depending on the selection available to you. This Year’s Garden
As summer heats up, I’ve fallen behind on my food blogging; so I thought I would share with you why… the garden. Bryan, the kids, the dog, and I occupy a small, but what I like to think of as quaint, home on a postage stamp sized lot in a suburban community of Detroit Michigan which I often refer to as “Mayberry.” We’ve worked hard to try to transform what was once a somewhat barren (other than being ridden with lemon balm and mint) yard. When I moved to the house (pre-Bryan), the back porch was enclosed with aluminum walls and outdated windows. The floor was painted an obnoxious bright blue (they missed the mark if they were going for the U. of M. look). Sharing the latest installation of Inviting Spaces By Kim this two half day transformation. We worked on this small patio off the family room of this Stanford, CA condominium with the clients 4 new Craigslist containers! Such lively colors to work with and from the condominium next door easily can enjoy a view as they come and go from their second floor spot! This is a definite passerby very friendly new addition to the neighborhood of a neighborhood friendly corner in multi-dwelling living.
The existing drip line irrigation for the succulents and drought tolerant plants will keep watering on timer. A simple solution to watering these new plantings. For many happy returns in their new spaces for many seasons to come.

But arguably the most significant trend is the emergence of what are being called “urban knights” – a growing army of new do-gooder green thumbs who are creating food and flower gardens wherever space will allow – on abandoned building sites, rooftops, balconies, alley ways, and in the limited space of their own front yards.
According to Susan McCoy, of the U.S.-based trend-spotting Garden Media Group, this new generation of gardeners is composed of environmentally-conscious Gen Xs and Ys who believe in the power of plants and regard plants as “no longer a luxury, but a necessity for our lives.”
This new horticultural ground force knows that “plants can live without us, but we can’t live without plants.

Container Gardening
Once spring has sprung, I can’t wait to go outside and plant some pretty flowers. And although I live in an apartment, it doesn’t mean I can’t create a beautiful garden. For those of us who live in apartments, container gardening allows us to participate in the spring time ritual of creating a garden. I have had two other container gardens in the past, so I am by no means a container garden expert, but I am going to give you directions on what has worked for me in the past.

Tomato Spectacular
I love growing tomatoes. I love the scent of the plants, the shape of the leaves, the way they branch and grow, and of course, the tomatoes themselves. I grow tomatoes on my porch in self-watering containers. That way there’s no weeding, and no matter how busy I am, it’s easy to make time to keep them watered.
This year I’m trying a few new things. Due to the heat, I want my plants to be a bit more drought tolerant, in case I need to leave them to their own devices for a few days. In order to accomplish this I’m top watering once a day instead of filling the reservoirs. I’m also trying a few new varieties this year – determinate, rather than indeterminate. I specifically chose varieties that are supposed to do well in containers. Finally, I’m trying a new type of fertilizer, Vganics. How is…

Privacy on the deck using plants
Ahhhh! I’m loving the warmth not just the air temperature but the beauty of these container gardens. I’m taking a break from indoor projects to plan for the deck and patio plantings. We had a trellis installed on the left side of the deck when it was built. I’ve tried for several years to use hanging baskets for privacy purposes. They usually look great for the first month, but their water needs are much greater in late June, July and August than I can maintain. I’ve also tried white sheer curtains, but I need a better way to hang them from the trellis than I’ve tried so far.
So if the top down theory doesn’t work, I’m thinking maybe from the bottom up is worth a try. I’ve done a search for tall container gardens. Most are from one of my favorite magazines, Better Homes and Gardens. These pictures…
