Summer watering

Reblogged from Bonsai Tonight:

Over the years I've heard a lot of admonitions about watering carefully in summer. And for good reason - trees can dry out quickly when its warm out. At a glance, it looked like most of my trees were over watered as moss was beginning to develop.

Green soil - a sign that the soil has been wet lately

This didn't totally make sense to me.

In this post I am going to show you the collection of a client we have who lives in Gunma. Gunma is located about an hour southeast of Nagano. The first half of these pictures were taken last fall. We had made a trip to clean old needles from his pine trees and a general cleaning of any weedy pots. The second half of the pictures were taken in mid February.

Trees with more than one trunk

Reblogged from Bonsai Tonight:

The recent Redwood Empire Bonsai Society's Annual Show boasted a healthy complement of multi-trunk and grove bonsai. Special considerations come into play when multiple trunks are present - should the trunks point the same way, should some be bigger than others, and how can balance be maintained between trunks? The more trunks that are present, the more complex the questions. Of groves we might ask, how great can the difference be between trunks, how important is the styling of individual trees, and where does the largest tree belong?

Myth Buster 9: Bonsai Plants are Auspicious

Reblogged from Sana Ako si Ricky Lee!:

A few years back a cousin requested for my help because he was encountering some financial difficulty. While his situation is not yet critical, his financial growth became stagnant. This is worrisome because the projected financial growth of his business is not meeting its expectations. He is also especially worried because he was relatively newly married (about a year) at that time and his wife was pregnant with their first baby.

Sacramento Bonsai Club - 64th Annual Show

Reblogged from Bonsai Tonight:

Sacramento Bonsai Club's 64th Annual Show

The Sacramento Bonsai Club held their 64th annual show this past weekend at the Sacramento Buddhist Church. The event left quite an impression. The exhibit showed how fun a spring show can be. The suiseki displays were a super addition to the show. And the 40 or so happi-coated club members were one of the nicest bonsai groups I've run into.

Golden State Bonsai Federation XXXIII Convention Exhibit

Golden State Bonsai Federation XXXIII Convention Exhibit

The Golden State Bonsai Federation (GSBF) held their 33rd Annual Convention, "New Faces," last weekend in Santa Clara, California. As always, the Convention featured a bonsai and suiseki exhibit. Bonsai were displayed in formal arrangements with accents - suiseki displays book-cased the bonsai at opposite ends of the room.

Although the exhibit was not large, it did a good job of representing California bonsai with trees from different parts of the state.

Refining a Western juniper

Reblogged from Bonsai Tonight:

It's been two years since I last showed my Western juniper at Bay Island Bonsai's 11th exhibit. It hasn't changed a lot since then. Knowing it could use some attention, I brought it to BIB's recent workshop run by Akio Kondo. Here's the tree before the workshop.

Western juniper

In the space of 10 minutes, Kondo suggested a new planting angle, made two cuts, and drew some lines on the trunk with a Sharpie.

This has been shared on Facebook and YouTube!! It's about 10 years old and is an interesting watch. Shinji Suzuki is the main focus of the video, a fantastic bonsai Artist.

I wondered about it being up on youtube, but after a quick internet search, it seems to be readily available to download free on the net via ebooks and many other sources.

No one told me to do it.  It wasn't even in my job description.  But, there is something about investing in people who are innate in what my calling is in life.

I seek out men who are going to "show up" when they are supposed to.  They are kind of guys who are dependable.  Their word is their bond.
